Hand-turned from spalted red oak harvested in the mountains of Western North Carolina, this sculptural bowl has been ebonized to a deep charcoal black that lets the grain do the talking. The growth rings ripple across the interior like a topographic map, and the sweeping, uneven rim follows the natural character of the wood rather than fighting it.
The spalting — nature's own figuring, drawn by fungus as the wood aged — gives every surface a pattern that can't be repeated. No two pieces like this exist, because the tree only made one.
